The October Orthopedic Camp was a 12-day outreach program conducted at Bwindi Community Hospital, Kanungu, from September 29 to October 10, 2024. The camp aimed to address the growing need for orthopedic care in the region by providing comprehensive diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative services. The primary goal of the camp was to improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from musculoskeletal disorders by providing accessible, specialized orthopedic and rehabilitative care.

– Total Patients Screened: 77 cases
– Orthopedic Patients: 40 cases
– Physiotherapy Outpatient Screening: 37 cases
Orthopedic Patient Breakdown
– Operative Patients: 15 cases booked
– Non-Operative Patients: 4 cases booked
– Total Arthroplasty Required (Not Possible): 2 cases
– Referral Patients: 2 cases
– Amputees: 4 cases (benefitting from prosthetics)
Surgical Outcomes
– Theatre Procedures: 14 procedures on 11 patients
– No Surgery Done: 4 cases
– No Deaths Reported

Non-Operative Interventions
– Steroid Injections: 3 cases
– Non-Operative Fracture Management: 1 case
Physiotherapy Services (modified by Diana, physiotherapist)
Physiotherapy treated: 47 patients of whom 8 children and 39 adults (25 females and 14 males
At screening, 19 patients were seen –
– Outpatient Physiotherapy Cases: 37 patients
– Post-Operative Physiotherapy Cases: 11 patients
One child benefitted from orthesis paid for by a member of the Africomed team
Follow-up Patients from previous year:
– Total Follow-up Patients Seen: 3 cases.
Camp Success Rate:
– Successful Surgeries: 100% (14 procedures)
– Patient Satisfaction: Positive feedback, still under evaluation
Conclusion
The Orthopedic Camp, September 29 – October 10, 2024, successfully provided quality care to 77 patients, demonstrating:
– Efficient patient evaluation and triage.

– Appropriate non-operative management.
